Using VoIP service
has numerous benefits compared to regular telephone service. This
page will cover the pros of using VoIP phone service and then
the next section will cover the cons.
Long
Distance Savings Using VoIP Service:
If you
make a lot of long distance calls, expect your monthly bill to
be drastically cut. Many VoIP service plans have unlimited long
distance minutes included in one monthly charge. This would include
all long distance calls within your state, state-to-state, and
even to Canada in some situations.
Local
Phone Service Savings Using VoIP Service:
Using
VoIP phone service means your dial tone, local calls, and calling
features are included. Most plans include basic calling features
such as Caller ID, Call Waiting, etc. But some plans include just
about every calling feature available plus features not currently
available with standard phone service, all of which is covered
in the monthly charge.
Taxes
and Fees:
VoIP
service currently doesn't require you to pay numerous taxes and
fees compared to traditional phone service. You will pay a 3%
federal tax and possibly a small line charge each month, but no
State tax unless you live in the same State the provider is located.
You
are also not required to pay the Universal Service Fund
charge (USF). Using traditional phone service you are charged
the USF on every state-to-state and international call, usually
between 7 to 10%.
Number
and Location:
Live
in Missouri but want a New York phone number? No problem when
you use VoIP phone service. Some providers will even allow you
to choose additional numbers that will ring to your home or business.
You could live in Wisconsin and have a Wisconsin number, but then
also have a California number, a Kansas number, etc.
Travel
With Your Phone:
Another
amazing aspect of VoIP service is when you travel. You can take
your adaptor (ATA) with you on trips, plug it into a high speed
internet connection along with a touchtone phone, and make a receive
calls just as if you were at home or at the office. The ATA is
about the size of a portable CD player and is easy to carry.
No
Computer Needed:
A few
years ago you would use a computer and microphone to make calls
over the Internet. Today's VoIP phone service uses your regular
touchtone phone and high speed Internet connection, so you don't
even need a computer.
